Activists Bike Ride 1,200 Miles to Raise Awareness about Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Auto Date Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Three cyclists are embarking on a 1,200-mile journey to honor Mesothelioma victims and raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos, which causes mesothelioma and other diseases. Two English attorneys are joining activist Jason Addy whose been preparing for this ride for some time. The team is riding from Glasgow to Southhampton, England, visiting communities especially affected by mesothelioma. Recently, the team visited the town of Armley. Armley is home to the former site of the JM Roberts factory, which was responsible for contaminating the surrounding community with asbestos fibers that eventually killed hundreds of residents. The cycling team also met with some of the cast of the play Dust, which tells the story of the story of the JM Roberts factory and the asbestos contamination that devastated the community. The purpose of the bike ride is to raise awareness about mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases and to promote the creation of a national research center dedicated to mesothelioma. These athletes join a growing number of grass-roots activists who have organized public events, sometimes rather spectacular and challenging ones, to raise aware and fund research for mesothelioma. Recently, we reported that the children of a mesothelioma victim were skydiving to raise funds for a mesothelioma research foundation in honor of their father. See ,a href=”http://www.mesotheliomanews.com/2009/06/26/mesothelioma-victim-skydive/”>related story. Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, abdomen or heart. Generally, it takes decades for mesothelioma to develop after asbestos exposure, which is why new cases of this preventable, asbestos-related disease are continuing to rise.
