Writing Articles: A Simple 5 Step Formula that Takes You from Idea to Prospects and Profits

Auto Date Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Writing articles has many, many benefits. One of the simplest yet most powerful I call “5 Steps from Idea to Prospects and Profits.”

Here’s how it works:

Step One - Write Your Article

Write your article from your knowledge base and area of expertise. I always suggest writing as if you are talking to just one person. You want to make it useful so readers will benefit, yet incomplete so readers will want more.

Step Two - Submit Your Article to EzineArticles.com and other article directories

As of this writing, September 12, 2005, I’ve been submitting articles for only 5 months, and the results have been tremendous. It is the fastest and most inexpensive path to increased traffic, prospects, publicity and profits.

Step Three - Your Article is Picked Up and Published on a Website or in an Internet Newsletter

How would you like to create 100’s of virtual relationships with people all over the world? This is what happens when your articles are published on websites and in internet newsletters.

Step Four - Prospect Reads Your Article and Clicks Through to Your Site

Just the other night my son asked me why I spent so much time “giving away your articles for nuthin’?” I then showed him the process I am showing you and he got it.

When someone reads your article and likes what you have to say, they are going to want more, and will then visit your site.

Step Five - You Get a Visitor, Prospect, Customer or Client

At the very least you will get another visitor to your website that you can convert into a prospect or customer.

More and more, readers are clicking in to my sites and at the very least become subscribers, and often become customers.

All in five easy steps.

How to Measure the Value of Your Article Marketing Campaign

Auto Date Sunday, June 1st, 2008

It’s not enough to scatter your articles across the internet - you’ve got to measure what you’re doing so you can be sure that you’re getting value from your effort.

Here are some of my preliminary thoughts on what’s measurable in regards to article marketing, (and what you measure should depend on your predefined article marketing goals, but you knew that already):

Number of new of links to your site

This is a big one of course, and just about the easiest to measure with a simple “link:” search in the major engines.

Since I submitted “Build Links and Your Brand: Article Marketing Delivers” to 8 directories on January 26th Google has logged 24 instances of my article (I did have a little help from search engine expert Andy Beal’s mention in his blog), MSN search shows 59 instances and Yahoo has me down for 10.

Now, all those mentions aren’t links… just instances of my article title.

Google currently shows no links to my main blog site. Yahoo and MSN both show 14 to http://articlemarketing.blogspot.com.

I’m also currently ranked 3rd in Yahoo for the term article marketing - woo hoo! Not bad for only 3 days. We’ll see how long I stay there - things may change dramatically after an update. I’m currently nowhere to be found in MSN. Ditto for Google, except the post from Andy’s blog about my article marketing blog that puts me at 4th for “article marketing.”

To give some idea of scale, here are the number of millions of results for article marketing per engine: 12 million in Yahoo; 17 million in MSN; 27 million in Google. I don’t think Article Marketing is a phrase that currently generates much competition.

Article submission sites like EzineArticles get the freshbot treatment because of their regularly updated content and I think that speeds indexing.

Article submitted 1-26-05, searches conducted 1-29-05.

Number of readers/impressions

To borrow a bit from the world of online advertising you can measure impressions, that is, the estimated number of readers/site visitors who had the opportunity to at least read your article title and, let’s hope, associate it with your business name.

To get an idea of how many impressions your article may have gotten talk with those who republish your article. If you submit to EzineArticles you can see how many writers and editors have viewed your article’s page.

It’s great to have your impressions high, but it’s better to have them targeted to your audience (and by audience I mean customers… here are my thoughts on client as audience). The more care you give your content creation process the more your content will appeal to your target audience.

Which brings us to…

Placement in previously identified key industry media

If at the beginning of your article marketing campaign you identify key industry publications you’d like to be published in… and you get published or don’t get published, that’s something you can measure.

This is more of a branding initiative than a linking initiative, though it can certainly generate at least one solid link. And once your article’s been published and your editor says “go” you can submit it to your article submission directories of choice. And then measure links.

Lead generation through reader inquiries

This is a fun one. There are specific industries and products that are likely to sell well through article marketing… namely information products. If your primary goal for article marketing is sales though you should construct your article campaign in a particular way. Many of the same rules still apply, but the strategy needs to be a little different. Let me know if you have questions about creating sales generating articles. And you still have to follow responsible article writing guidelines.

Email addresses gathered for newsletter signup/downloads/free service

Yeah you’re being published in someone else’s email newsletter but that doesn’t mean you can’t try to drive signups to your own newsletter! We had this happen when I worked at WebProNews, where we published all free content. One author’s article marketing strategy focused on driving subscribers to her newsletter. I think, but I’m not sure, that it was Dianna Huff, who specializes in B2B article marketing. As an aside, be sure to check out her site.

Pageviews to info pages on your site

If you link out of your article to more info pages on your site you can measure for an increase in traffic on those pages. Have some kind of call to action on these pages though. Don’t just boost page views for the sake of having higher page views. Get them to do something on that page, such as give you an email address or visit your products or services page.

Requests from editors for articles

If it’s your goal to have more involvement with your target market then be sure to accept all requests from editors for new articles. In fact, cultivate any relationship with an editor you can. This is one fantastic way of staying in front of your target audience and getting new ideas for articles.

How can you increase this likelihood? Contact editors from publications within your target market. In addition, include a mention in your author bio that you’d like to work with editors to help them have happier, more engaged readers.

Audience involvement/questions

This is another fun one, and something I tried to promote during my time at WPN. The level of reader feedback I received led to my creation of the “Ask the Expert” section of WPN (now untended) as well as my proposal for the WebProWorld forums, now with over 50,000 members. (To be fair iEntry had rolled out forums before - they were just scattered across all our publications rather than targetted on the flagship. WebProWorld was definitely a home run.)

So if you’d like to establish more of a relationship with the online audience in your publications contact their editor and see if you can field audience questions.

What else is measurable?

Those are a few of my thoughts for article marketing measurables. Did I miss any? Let me know your measurable ideas and if I use them in an upcoming article I’ll throw you a link with your link text of choice.

Marketing Articles That Become Your Slaves Forever

Auto Date Saturday, May 31st, 2008

The slave trade was a horrible evil trade that is said to be alive and well to this day and understanding the motivation behind it will help us understand and appreciate the true value of a marketing article.

A slave works for you for life to produce wealth and yet receives no wages or investment from your part. Imagine a tool that does that for your marketing and you are definitely thinking of a marketing article.

Well written marketing articles where you have taken the time to carefully choose the best keywords to use will continue to attract increasing traffic from search engines. This traffic is usually not only highly targeted, but it is free in more ways than one. You are not paying a dime to maintain your marketing article and neither are you spending any time making alterations or updates to it, and yet it faithfully continues to generate more and more traffic for you.

The reason why your marketing article will tend to yield increased traffic rather than reducing or constant traffic is because as your site grows in age and as you increase the number of links pointing at it, its’ ranking will improve. More sites will also link to it and the same old ’slave’ marketing article will therefore tend to get a bigger audience.

Then there is the fact that the viral effect will be more wide spread with time, meaning that more sites out there will re-post your marketing article from the directories where you may have posted it complete with your resource box to direct traffic to your site.

How many ’slave’ marketing articles have you put out there to work for you today?

Winclear :How To Delete History On Internet

Auto Date Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Yes, preventing intrusions from the web, keeping files safe and ensuring the secure transactions of online banking can be done using free applications. And I mean not demo versions of software, not trial editions, but fully functional tools that many PC users either have never heard about or just don’t trust anything that goes with a 4-letter word. Keyloggers usually show what applications were used on the controlled computer what sites a child visited and what he actually wrote to his online pals.

Your anti-spyware options are far too numerous to list here and we should stick to the ones where it is run and monitored by one person and that person alone. It prevents anyone from uninstalling the anti-spyware accidentally or disabling the software on purpose. I have known friends complain that their software keeps notifying them when it eliminates spyware and malware (close cousins), so they disabled it. Not an especially good idea these days. Data loggers, key loggers are just a few programs which harvest info from your computer. Winclear is the only program created specially to auto remove such spywares. The biggest culprit in this recent rise in cyber crime is spyware the buzzword that is on the lips of every internet user. That is why every computer owner needs winclear.

Protect With Winclear :Privacy Online
If your account was compromised while AccSent was enabled, there is a high probability that you either have a security hole in your computer, which allowed hackers to take control of your computer or you have a Trojan virus, spyware or keylogger software installed on your computer because someone not only had access to your e-gold passphrase, they also had access to your email address password. Winclear is the only software which is capable of removing keylogger programs. Generally the information there is safe because it is non-executable text files. Winclear has been the industry leader in fighting keyloggers for the last 8 years.

Winclear:
The problem is that this Trojan contains a keylogger which lurks at the background until the user of the infected PC visits one of the specified websites. That is the reason why you need Winclear installed onto your computer. Children who do not have a lot of activities outside of school tend to be online longer and at the same times of day compared to those children who have lots of activities. Protect your computer security by using Winclear! More about Winclear here: Winclear.

Rich Writing Content for Building Web Traffic Is Everywhere - You Just Need to Make the Connections

Auto Date Monday, May 19th, 2008

When writing articles as an Internet marketing strategy to enhance search engine optimization (SEO), one of the most obvious challenges is finding rich content. Looking at the expert authors at Ezine, one can’t help to wonder where do they get all their ideas, not to mention all the time? Imagine writing over 100 articles less along 700 to 3,000.

Nine months ago I had those exact same thoughts as I just completed my first 10 articles to build web traffic. In an email from Chris Knight, he shared that I probably needed at least 100 articles. My brain was a dither. One hundred articles, where does one find the words, ideas, topics and rich content for 100 articles?

So, I set a goal to have 100 articles completed by December 31, 2005. Then being the fairly proficient goal planner and achiever, I began identifying all the obstacles potentially preventing me from achieving this goal. Besides the obstacle of time, the biggest one was ideas. So, I went to expert writers at http://www.ezinearticles.com. All of the most proficient authors wrote about a variety of subjects even though they had expertise in one field.

As I scanned these articles, I realized that many had one common thread. This thread was connecting one idea to another topic and then rewriting a similar, but not exactly the same article. This Connections Approach generates more articles and saves time because you aren’t reinventing the wheel with every article that you write. For example, writing about teenagers’ behavior can connect into a second article for parents. For life and learning is truly about how we make those connections between new experiences and existing ones.

Now, that I was seeing the same landscape with different eyes, this awareness began to grow. As I talked with colleagues or read daily news stories, ideas started percolating up and sometimes the ideas felt like it was a series of volcanic eruptions.

With regards to the time management obstacle, I schedule one early morning hour, 5 times each week to write. I have an electronic file called work in progress. Within this file may be anywhere from one to 10 articles of which I am writing and fine tuning. By having the focus and habit of writing, I will be able to achieve this year’s goal of 300 articles because rich content is everywhere.

Choosing Point of View

Auto Date Monday, April 28th, 2008

Deciding which point of view (POV) to use in your ms is a very important aspect of your story. Depending on which one you use, it can change the story completely.

There are three main POV’s:

• Omniscient

• Third Person Omniscient

• First Person

So how do you decide which one to use? First you need to understand the mechanics of each POV, then work out which one will best tell the story.

Omniscient:

This POV is basically an all seeing, all hearing, all knowing, POV. The ‘narrator’ knows pretty much everything that is going on in the story. In some ways, this POV is very similar to ‘head-hopping’ although in the true sense it’s not. With omniscient, the viewpoint moves all around the place. This particular POV is still used, but not as frequently as in the past.

Third Person Omniscient:

A large proportion of modern-day novels are written in this POV. Third person omniscient tells the story from one point of view, but in the one story that may vary. Huh?

Let’s say you have two main characters - you might decide to tell the story from Pete’s POV in the first scene, and perhaps Mary Allen’s in the second. You may leave it in Mary Allen’s for another two scenes, because it suits the purpose of the story, then back to Pete’s. But in each case, the story is only told from the relevant protagonist’s POV, and the other one does not know what’s going on.

Reasons for writing in third person omniscient POV:

* You want the reader to understand each character’s motivation

* To build tension

Here are a couple of examples -

Pete’s POV:

Pete could feel the anger churning up inside himself. He knew he was clenching and unclenching his fists, could feel the vein in his neck pulsing, and could feel that ache in his head getting stronger. He could even feel the sweat begin to trickle down his face.

Mary Allen’s POV:

Oops! Now she’d done it. Pete was not happy - far from it.

Mary Allen sat anxiously in her chair, her back upright, her shoulders squared. She watched as Pete’s hands firstly clenched, then unclenched. Sweat trickled down his face and glistened above his lips. As she watched the vein on his neck tick almost continuously, Mary Allen realised just how angry Pete really was.

First Person:

First person POV is literally the story being told by one person; the ‘me’ in the story.

It’s a little more tricky, mainly because you need to ensure that only that one person’s POV is used. You also need to make certain that you only mention something that the first person protagonist can see, hear, or feel. For instance, if someone was coming up behind your protagonist, they can’t see it, so you (the writer) cannot mention it.

If they blush, you can’t say “I saw my face blushing”. You could say “I could feel the heat creeping up my face” because the protagonist would feel it.

A lot of writers keep away from this POV, simply because they believe it’s too hard. Please don’t do that to yourself. Once you understand and master the basic concepts, it is a very easy POV to write, and it’s incredibly effective.

One of the simplest ways to conquer this POV is to literally put yourself in the protagonist’s shoes. Pretend you are wearing a spy cam on your head. Walk into a room, take a look around. Notice the television and video, the coffee table and sofa. Look at the ceiling fan, with its light sprinkling of dust.

Look down and study the carpet. Can you see the intricate pattern? What about your ten year old son coming up behind you, a bucket of water in his hands?

If you saw your adolescent offspring, then you just blew it. Because you do not have eyes in the back of your head, you cannot see behind you. The lesson here is that a first person narrator cannot see what she physically cannot see.

Reasons for writing in first person POV:

* You don’t want the reader to have the full story

* You only want one POV to come across

* To make only one character’s motivation clearer.

Now that you understand the concepts, let’s look at the above two examples and turn them into first person POV -

“Pete! What’s wrong?” From the minute Joe mentioned what had happened, Pete’s reaction was predictable. Before I’d even glanced across the room at him I knew that tell-tale vein would be ticking; the way it always did when he was angry.

*As you can see, POV is extremely important to your story. Understand it correctly, and utilize its full potential to your advantage. ©

Article Marketing: How to Submit Your Articles at Turbo Speed

Auto Date Friday, April 25th, 2008

Want to become an article-writing machine? Here are a few tricks for submitting articles on the internet at top speed and accuracy.

As always, you should first type your article text into a Word document and save it on your hard drive. Many article sites offer space on their servers for your work, but ideally you should have a home for it on your own computer- just in case. Next, transfer your article text from your Word file to the article submission box. The quickest way to do this is to “set it all up” ahead of time.

Quick Copy-and-Paste Article Transfer

Start by finding a music CD of your choice that will get you into some kind of groove. Pop that into your Discman, CD player or whatever else you like to listen to your tunes on, and settle down in front of the computer. Take a deep breath, sit up straight, palm the mouse and then do the following:

1. Log in to your Ezinearticles.com account (or whatever other account you may be using to submit articles.)

2. Go to your existing Author Bio and hit Control-A (Highlight All) and then Control-C (Copy).

3. Go back to the Word file where your article is located and scroll to the end of your article, after the copyright line. Type Control-V (Paste) and add your bio text.

4. Now type Control-A (Highlight All). The text of your entire article and bio will be highlighted. Type Control-C (Copy).

5. Return to your article submission box and do a Control-V (Paste). Both the article text and the Author Bio will now be housed in the place where your article lives.

6. Scroll down to the end of your article text; that’s where the Author Bio is. You are going to remove it from here and pop it into the Author Bio box.

7. Highlight the Author Bio text with your mouse and then do a Control-X (simultaneous Delete and Copy).

8. Go into the Author Bio Box and Control-V (Paste). Your author bio should now land in the proper place.

Note: when writing articles for the internet, it’s wise to break up your text into easy-to-read sections. Bolded subheadlines will guide the reader’s eye down the page, thereby holding their attention on that excellent copy that you took such care in writing!

Here’s a formula for adding bold, ital and other HTML tags to your articles in a hurry.

1. Type your entire article in regular type, with no code.

2. Go to the first sentence that you want bolded and type your < B > code (but without spaces).

3. Highlight the HTML Bold tag that you just typed, and hit Control-C (for Copy).

4. Now go to the end of the line where you want the Bold to stop and hit Control-V (for Paste). Now add a / mark before the B in that end tag.

5. Scan the article from top to bottom wherever you want bold, copying and pasting tags where necessary.

6. Go back to the top and repeat the process for Italic, if you have that in your article too.

Bonus Tip: To get your mouse to the beginning or end of a long page of text (such as an article), type Control-A (Highlight All), and then the Up or Down Arrow. If you accidentally delete it, just hit Control-Z (Undo) and it should appear again.

A quick copy-and-paste routine like the ones I just described really comes in handy when submitting articles in mass distribution. Faster is better! Have fun.

Website Content | How to Get It And Keep It Useful

Auto Date Friday, April 18th, 2008

Content is King. No doubt you’ve heard this before.

There’s just no getting around the fact that in order to attract
visitors you must offer useful, fresh, quality information that
people, and don’t forget the search engines, crave.

One of the best ways of obtaining good, useful content is by
writing articles; but hold on a minute, finding an article in an
article bank, placing it on your site and forgetting about it is
not what it’s about.

Remember, we said your site must offer useful, fresh, quality
information. Your site won’t qualify by uploading rehashed
articles that can be found all over the internet or worse yet,
articles that are aging like fine wine on your site. You risk
losing value and credibility with both viewers and search
engines alike.

Good, quality content can be summed up as offering useful
information that is current and offers new or interesting points
of view. There are several ways to accomplish this and writing
articles is an excellent way of adding content but if you’re not
a writer, and believe me most people are not, there are several
ways to add content that is not found everywhere, yet will offer
a new, fresh perspective.

- Use Editorials. Editorials are articles written offering a
personal opinion. Editorials are often food for thought and
invite viewer opinions. Urge guests to your web site to write
relevant editorials for placement on your site. You will often
get good feedback and comments that keep your site interesting
and colorful.

- Have articles written for you. If writing is not your forte,
by all means, have it done for you. Elance.com is an excellent
resource for writing exclusive articles just for you, and it can
be done for as little as $5-$10 each.

- If your an affiliate marketer, use content articles provided
by the merchant. Good affiliate merchant programs will often
have content articles that you can place on your site. Not all
merchants offer this service, but it’s a worthwhile benefit for
those that do. The articles are typically very informative and
they include your affiliate links within the articles. An
excellent way to get relevant, useful content and promote your
links as well.

- Exchange articles with guest visitors. If you have a bulletin
board or guest book, invite visitors to exchange articles. If
you use an article, make sure you get exclusivity. When someone
writes for you, make sure they won’t submit that same article to
dozens of other web sites and newsletters.

- News Stories Keep your site up to date with the latest news
stories related to your site topic. Use news stories that are
relevant, useful and timely. Simply find a news item you wish to
use and write a brief 2 to 3 line summary on your site, then
include a link to the full story. Remember to keep the news
articles recent and relevant.

- Interviews Depending on your web site topic, find someone that
is well known in the field and ask them to consider conducting
an interview with you. Compose a number of relevant, perhaps
burning questions that many people would be interested in and
compose an answer and question interview. You’d be surprised at
how many interested viewers you might attract.

- Product or book reviews If you endorse a product on your web
site, go the extra step and purchase the product yourself. Use
the product and write a useful review. This not only adds
useful, original content, it creates credibility and establishes
you as an informative resource.

- Post a forum on your site. This often gets lots of interest
because people can post comments, questions, and opinions. It
will also keep viewers returning time and time again to keep up
on the latest forum entries. It’s also an excellent way to make
connections and build joint ventures.

3 FrameMaker Tips

Auto Date Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Renaming the FrameMaker Books

Think twice before changing the name of a FrameMaker book file especially if the book includes TOC, index, List of Figures (LOF) and List of Tables (LOT) files.

Because when you try to compile a new PDF book file, FrameMaker will try to locate the newly-named versions of the TOC, IX, LOT, and LOF files.

When it can’t find them, it will refuse to create a PDF book.
You will have to re-create those TOC, IX, LOT and LOF files to compile the PDF file of the newly-named book.

Images disappear in PDF?

You save your FM document as PDF but the images in anchored frames disappear. All you get is blank frames.

Solution?

Select File > Preferences > General and check the Save FrameImage with Imported Graphics check-box.

Re-generate the PDF and all your images should be there.

Installing new or missing fonts for FM

1) Save (or extract) the fonts to a folder on your system.

2) Go to your Windows Control Panel > Fonts screen.

3) From the menu, select File > Install New Font… to display the Add Fonts dialog box.

4) Find the folder in which you have saved the desired font. Select it and make sure it appears in the List of Fonts list box. Make sure the Copy fonts to Fonts folder check-box is checked.

5) Click OK.

6) When you open your FM document, you should see the new font listed when you select Format > Font from the main menu.

(The new font should be accessible from other Windows applications like Photoshop as well.)
