When I started playing poker, I was one of those players who just wanted to play. In other words, I was way too loose and played a ludicrous amount of hands. Needless to say, I lost a lot of games of poker before I got smart and tightened up my game. Unfortunately, I don’t do moderation well; I swung all the way from way too loose to complete lockdown mode. I only played starting hands like high pocket pairs and A-K, with maybe King-Queen, but only if they were suited. Needless to say, I still didn’t win many poker online games, but instead of losing lots of money on the river, I tended to fold my way into a mind-numbing oblivion and let the blinds slowly bleed me dry of chips. Not only was I usually bored to tears, but whenever I finally did get a hand worth playing, my online poker opponents were tuned to my high card standards and they’d fold before I could get anybody else’s money into the pot.

Luckily, instead of deciding that poker was an impossible game to win, I settled into a happy middle ground. Nowadays I tend to adjust my play style to the personality of my opponents, the amount of money in my stack, and to my position at the table.

The two four suited or unsuited is a spacer connecting poker hand, still possible to make a straight with by filling the spaces in around it. Playing 2 4 instead of a hand like 2 3 seems less valuable in that it requires an even more specific set of board cards to make a online poker hand. But it also carries the value in that when you make a hand with the 2 4, no one is ever going to see it coming. Generally when you happen to end up involved with this online poker hand you are looking to flop a straight or a full house, sometimes two pair or a flush, though when you make either of these latter two your hand will still be vulnerable to higher two pairs and flushes, as well as many other hands with countless outs. The best board you could want with this hand is 1 3 5 rainbow, making a wheel, and second best is 3 5 6, making the second nut straight. Obviously both of these instances are rare and even then, again, vulnerable, making a hand like 2 4 more than a little difficult to bend to your favor. But when it does, bang!

In poker tournaments, players’ chip stacks go up and down. With tournaments being contests of elimination, it is inevitable that some players wind up with small stacks. Players who have built up big chip stacks can use their strength to bully the smaller stacks at the poker online table. But sometimes the short stack attacks back in a do-or-die effort to remain alive in the tournament.

A short stack can present a real risk to a big stack’s chips. It only takes a few double ups for a short stack to be a contender again and with not much to lose, a short stack is going to make that attempt. With the blinds threatening to erode a short stack into nothing, the short stack has to act even with marginal cards.

Always be aware of any short stacks betting behind you in a tournament. If you put out a bet, recognize that the small stack has only move - to go all in - and you may have to call that size bet. Your bet could be increased several times over pre-flop, and anything can happen once cards come out on the board.

Don’t bet in front of a short stack unless you are prepared to match the amount of chips in that stack. Keep this in mind when you play poker online.
